National Park Reports

The fifth grade has completed researching and writing about national parks in the United States. Each student reported on a national park and drew an accompanying illustration. The reports are on the wall across from the fifth grade classrooms. Please stop by and read about these beautiful locations. Maybe one might be your vacation destination next summer!

Boxtops for Education

The fifth grade class is in charge of collecting, sorting, and mailing the Boxtops for Education to the General Mills Company. Last year, we received a check for over $1,500 for the boxtops we collected. We encourage you to continue to collect boxtops because they benefit our school.

The Curriculum

Reading: The fifth grade reading curriculum is the Treasures reading program, published by the McGraw-Hill Company.  The Treasures reading program emphasizes vocabulary strategies and comprehension strategies and skills.  The series includes numerous materials that accommodate whole group instruction or small group instruction.

Fourth Grade Social Studies:  The fourth grade social studies curriculum is Nebraska history.  The students study Nebraska geography, history, economics, citizenship, and government.  Events in Nebraska history are often correlated with events occurring in United States history.  The regions of the United States are examined and used when applying map reading skills.

Fifth Grade Social Studies:  The fifth grade social studies curriculum is early United States history.  The students study early Native American cultures.  They also identify several European explorers and their contributions that led to the settlements of America.  The colonization of the United States, the Revolutionary War, and the growth of the United States are also addressed.  Map skills instruction is also linked to the social studies curriculum as students identify geographic terms and learn map reading skills.

Sixth Grade Social Studies:  The sixth grade social studies curriculum focuses on United States history from the Civil War to the present.  Special emphasis is placed on examining the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  People that made significant contributions during these periods of history are also studied.  Sixth graders also use map skills to interpret various maps and find specific information.
